Welcome to the Young Company!
Believing that a profound theater experience has the potential to transform its participants and audiences, the Young Company (a program of The Western Stage) was formalized in 1985 to provide quality theater experiences for young people in the Central Coast. The Young Company offers exciting opportunities for young people interested in becoming involved in the theater arts.

Love That Dog
(Inspired by Walter Dean Myers)
Love that dog,
like a bird loves to fly
I said love that dog,
like a bird loves to fly
Love to call him in the morning
love to call him
“Hey there, Sky!”
Once again The Western Stage (TWS) presents a summer project to benefit the SPCA for Monterey County. Opening August 3, 2013 – LOVE THAT DOG, a heartwarming tale by Newbery Medal-winning author Sharon Creech, is presented by TWS’s Young Company program and directed by Donna Federico using Word for Word techniques. Word for Word does not alter the author’s original text and preserves the author’s voice and intent through exciting visuals and inventive staging. “Love that Dog” is a delightful prose story disguised as poetry. Poetry is something that young Jack can’t stand — it’s confusing and odd and strictly for girls. And try as he might Jack can’t seem to convince his teacher that reading and writing is not cool. When he creates his own poetry and his teacher wants to post it on a board for the class to see, Jack insists on anonymity. Once Jack sees how good his poetry looks typed out on yellow paper and hears praise from his peers, he finally admits to his work.
Sponsored by the Sally Hughes Church Foundation, LOVE THAT DOG performs August 3rd and 4th at 2:00 pm in Hartnell College’s Performing Arts Building Choral Room (Bldg. K, room 125) and August 10th at 2:00pm at the Monterey County SPCA (very limited seating available for this performance).
The Western Stage Young Company is sponsored by the Sally Hughes Church Foundation, with additional support given by the S.T.A.R Foundation of Monterey.
